Athena Opera is a non-profit opera company
based in Athens, GA that operates in
conjunction with the University of Georgia.
While some of their singers are hired from
outside the area, the majority of the productions
are cast with students from UGA's Hugh
Hodgson School of Music. UGA's Opera
Ensemble is rapidly gaining notoriety for being
one of the area's finest performing ensembles.
In the 2007 - 2008 school year, the Opera
Ensemble was a featured act on WUGA's Once
in a Blue Moon, a part of the Athens Classic
Center's Community Series with full-staged
productions of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado,
Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, and
Verdi's La Traviata. The ensemble also
performed a concert of opera scenes in The
University of Georgia Performing Arts Center's
Ramsey Hall, an opera quartets program entitled
"Famous Foursomes" in Hodgson Hall, two
programs on WUGA's It's Friday! radio show,
and numerous recitals throughout the
community.
